Bollywood star Priyanka Chopra is kicked about performing with Shah Rukh Khan and Shahid Kapoor in Durban for celebrating the 150th year of India-South Africa friendship Saturday, and says she has a soft corner for the ‘friendly and inviting’ people of that country.

‘I was approached for this event when the idea was being discussed. I thought it was a wonderful way to celebrate the 150 years of friendship between India and South Africa. There is no better way than to celebrate it in true Bollywood style,’  said Priyanka.

The concert, which is being held to commemorate the arrival of the first Indian indentured labourers in 1860 to work on sugarcane plantations in South Africa, promises to be a glittering event with well-known names from the world of cricket and entertainment sharing a common platform.

The event, to be hosted by actor Anil Kapoor, is an initiative by AAMEDIA, a South African corporate, and Cricket South Africa. It is being directed and executed by Wizcraft International Entertainment and Cineyug Productions.

Priyanka, who has shot for her films Andaaz and Aitraaz in South Africa in the past, says she has a ‘surprise’ in store for her fans. She also revealed that she has an ‘interesting performance lined up’ on popular songs like Maa da laadla, Desi girl and Raat ke dhai baje.

The 28-year-old actor, who will be flying out to Durban from Mumbai Friday night, is especially upbeat about the event as she finds a lot of similarities between India and South Africa.

‘Given that there has been a 150-year association between the two countries, there are many similarities between the two. In many ways there is a certain familiarity every time I go there (South Africa). I have been to South Africa many times and enjoyed every trip,’ said Priyanka, who last visited the country in 2009 when she went to judge the Miss World pageant in Johannesburg.

The picturesque landscapes apart, Priyanka loves South Africa for its hospitality.

“No. My team is great. We have a great mix of celebrities from different fields. It’s this team that makes the show alive and kicking with everyone,” replied Chopra who is a diehard cricket fan.

Finally having a gorgeous host like her would prove to be a distraction for the 13 contestants. “I intend to be a distraction. That will make their task even more difficult,” Chopra concluded.

She is smart, glamorous and one of the most sought after actresses in Bollywood, but Priyanka Chopra says it was difficult for her to portray a simple, beautiful girl in forthcoming film “Pyaar Impossible” and still try to hold the interest of audiences.

“When you do characters like one in ‘Aitraaz’, ‘Fashion’ or ‘Kaminey’, there are certain peripheries. For example, Sweety in ‘Kaminey’ won’t be able to speak English or she won’t wear jeans and top. They are also difficult, but the boundaries help. When I am playing a simple beautiful looking girl, how do I get your interest?” Priyanka said.

“Heroines ought to look beautiful, it’s their work. We look pretty, we wear great clothes but that’s our job. But how do I make you feel for her? That’s why these films are more difficult,” Priyanka, who has teamed up with Uday Chopra in the film, told IANS.

Talking about her character in “Pyaar Impossible”, Priyanka said: “I play Alisha who works in a software company. She has always been a popular girl, fun loving and one who loves life. But at a young age she has to take a lot of responsibilities and she finds it difficult to manage and her life becomes chaotic,” said Priyanka.

Uday Chopra and Priyanka Chopra starrer romantic comedy “Pyaar Impossible”, made under the banner of Yash Raj Films, is now scheduled to release next year to escape the clutch of releases at the end of this year.

“‘Pyaar Impossible’ will now release in the new year for strategic and logistical reasons. This prudent decision has been prompted by the overcrowding of film releases in the year end. The release date in January will be announced soon,” said a press release from Yash Raj Films.

Directed by Jugal Hansraj and penned by Uday Chopra, it is about how love brews between a beauty (Priyanka) and a geek (Uday).

Bollywood actress Priyanka Chopra, who is riding on the success of “Kaminey”, has pledged her support to a fund-raising project started by international fashion brand Bulgari, which is celebrating its 125 years, for the defence of children’s rights.

“It goes without saying that children are our future and we need to do whatever it takes to ensure that they have a chance for a better future by educating them and protecting their rights. I’m very proud to be a part of this initiative. I firmly believe that every little step we take will make a difference in the long run,” Priyanka said in a press release.

Bulgari, an Italian company, has chosen to support the “Rewrite the Future” campaign started by Save the Children, an independent international organisation that works for children’s rights and has its presence in around 100 countries.
